Begin by sorting everything into categories. Decide what you want to keep, donate, recycle, or throw away. Moving is a great opportunity to get rid of broken tools, old paint cans, unused gardening supplies, and anything else that’s been collecting dust.
Next, organize similar items together. Pack hand tools in sturdy boxes and wrap sharp edges to prevent injuries. Place heavier items on the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top. Small hardware like screws, nails, and bolts can be stored in labeled plastic bags or containers so they’re easy to find later.
Lawn equipment requires a little extra preparation. Drain gasoline and oil from lawn mowers, trimmers, and other gas-powered equipment before moving day. Propane tanks, gasoline, paint, and many other hazardous materials cannot be transported on a moving truck, so be sure to dispose of them properly before your move.
Don’t forget bikes, ladders, and larger outdoor equipment. Secure loose parts and remove any detachable accessories to prevent damage during transport.
Finally, label every box clearly with its contents and destination. A little organization now will save you hours of searching once you’re in your new home.
